OXFORD CENTENNIAL ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS
The Centennial Expeditions embark on a bold vision: seven interconnected Arctic expeditions spanning three years, culminating in retracing three historic routes pioneered by the Oxford University Exploration Club. These journeys pay tribute to a century of exploration, showcasing the evolution of expeditionary capabilities and ethical practices.
Each expedition will forge partnerships with leading research institutions, fostering collaboration and co-creation of meaningful goals and scientific discoveries. Together, we honour the legacy of the past while charting a future of innovation and responsible exploration.
HISTORY OF OUEC
The Oxford University Exploration Club (OUEC) is one of the world's oldest exploration organisations, established in 1927, with a legacy of curiousity, resilience, and scientific discovery. Throughout its first century, the club has supported more than 450 expeditions globally, combining exploration with scientific fieldwork.
OUR WORK
The Oxford Centennial Arctic Expeditions will retrace three historic Arctic routes previously undertaken by founding members of the club. The expeditions will study the biology, geology, and anthropology of extreme environments, broadening our understanding of Arctic ecosystems and human adaptation.
OUR FUTURE
The Centennial Expeditions celebrate the Club's past while demonstrating the advancement in exploration ethics and programming. To that end, these expeditions set the foundation for future generations of explorers to get involved in Arctic research with local partners, focusing especially on ethical and safe expedition research.
THE TEAM
The Foundations Expedition Team is led by four Oxford University Exploration Club committee members with over two decades of fieldwork and exploration experience, local collaboration, and project planning. Our wide range of expertise and close coordination allow us to address a range of research and adventure challenges with efficiency and safety.
